copyright information

Copyright Overview

On occasion, the outlines and other materials for conferences, trainings and meetings are made available only in hardcopy. This happens when the coordinating brothers or the author(s) have asked that we not distribute them via electronic means due to copyright restrictions. We will always endeavor to make printed copies of materials available to you in advance of these gatherings. Usually, they’ll be placed in a box on the front porch at the meeting house. If you’re unable to pick one up, please let one of the brothers know and we’ll make arrangements to get one to you.

We, the responsible brothers in Pleasant Hill, felt that it would be helpful to provide additional information on this matter.

Copyright protects original works of authorship as soon as an author finalizes the work in a tangible form of expression. In copyright law, there are a lot of different types of works, including written works, paintings, photographs, illustrations, musical compositions, sound recordings, computer programs, books, poems, blog posts, movies, architectural works, plays, and  much more.

Copyrighting allows the author to administer how their materials are used, edited, excerpted and made available. This is crucial to maintaining the accuracy of these materials and ensuring that they are made available in appropriate context. It could be highly damaging to the Lord’s testimony and the saints if ministry materials were presented in context with the work of others that might not be accurate or appropriate. Additionally, copyrighting stops select portions the ministry from being used out of context which can lead to significant misunderstandings. Copyrighting materials and adherence to copyright requirements are practical ways to cut straight the word of the truth, unfold the word of God in its various parts rightly and straightly without distortion and to prevent the enemy from ruining the hearers, promoting ungodliness and overthrowing people’s faith. Unfortunately, several of LSM’s publications, including the Recovery Version of the Bible, have been usurped by others and are available alongside unsavory and damaging works by others.

What does a copyright do?

U.S. copyright law provides copyright owners with the following exclusive rights:

  • Reproduce the work in copies or phonograph records.
  • Prepare derivative works based upon the work.
  • Distribute copies or phonorecords of the work to the public by sale or other transfer of ownership or by rental, lease, or lending.
  • Perform the work publicly if it is a literary, musical, dramatic, or choreographic work; a pantomime; or a motion picture or other audiovisual work.
  • Display the work publicly if it is a literary, musical, dramatic, or choreographic work; a pantomime; or a pictorial, graphic, or sculptural work. This right also applies to the individual images of a motion picture or other audiovisual work.
  • Perform the work publicly by means of a digital audio transmission if the work is a sound recording.
  • Copyright also provides the owner of copyright the right to authorize others to exercise these exclusive rights, subject to certain statutory limitations.

Why is a copyright important to the ministry?

In 2 Timothy 2:15, Timothy is charged by Paul to "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, an unashamed workman, cutting straight the word of the truth.” The footnote indicates that as in carpentry, cutting means to unfold the word of God in its various parts rightly and straightly without distortion. The footnote goes on to state that contentions of words, profane, vain babblings, the word that eats away like gangrene , and foolish questionings and those arising from an untrained mind are often used by the devil in the downward current among the churches to beget contentions, to ruin the hearers, to promote ungodliness, and to overthrow people’s faith. Hence, there is the need of the word of the truth, rightly unfolded, to enlighten the darkened people, inoculate against the poison, swallow up the death, and bring the distracted back to the proper track.
